Real Time Application Response Time Monitoring From Itheon
Why is the application slow? When end-users experience poor application response times they always have a favourite scapegoat - it’s the network, it’s the server, it’s the application. Itheon QoS can rapidly pinpoint the true cause of the problem, helping to cut time wasted in frustrating exploration.

Itheon QoS measures and records actual (rather than simulated) application response times for every transaction made to your key applications. It summarises all of the network traffic, network users, applications and associated utilisation. With only a few clicks, you will be able to identify what’s really causing poor application response time.

Itheon QoS issues real-time warnings when application performance, bandwidth availability or usage, and/or traffic flows fall outside user-defined parameters.

Measure Performance, Not Just Availability
100% availability of IT components does not always guarantee adequate application performance. It is possible to have all elements of your IT infrastructure up and running and yet still have end-users complaining about unacceptably slow response times. In addition to ensuring the availability of IT components, support teams need to know how quickly IT based business services are being delivered to the users and just how good the quality of the delivered service really is.

Itheon QoS addresses this need by monitoring the response times of IT based Business Services and issuing alerts when performance falls below defined thresholds.

Find out where the problem really lies
When end-users complain that an application is performing badly you can use Itheon QoS to determine:

  • Is it a network or server issue?
  • Has performance deteriorated?
  • Who is effected (single or multiple users)
  • Where in the network the problem exists
  • What is running over the network?
  • Are other applications or traffic types responsible?
  • Is the other traffic relevant or undesirable? – is someone downloading MP3s, watching Big Brother or making Skype calls?
  • What other requests are being issued to the server

In just a few clicks, you can drill-down to quickly find out:

  • How much delay there is on the PC side of the network
  • How much delay there is on the server side of the network
  • How much delay comes from the application

Armed with this information it becomes easier to work out what’s causing the problem and who’s best able to resolve it.

How does Itheon QoS work?
Itheon QoS connects to any network segment (10/100/1000) of interest by mirroring (spanning) or tapping standard Ethernet port connections. Once plugged in, Itheon QoS non-intrusively monitors the traffic passing it, including requests and responses to business applications.

The analysed data is viewed using integrated reports and graphs.

Itheon QoS will also enable you to collect data from multiple network areas simultaneously by simply plugging additional detectors into the required network segments. In addition, Itheon QoS has enterprise connectors allowing integration with major helpdesk, frameworks and network management systems including Heat, Remedy, Tivoli, OpenView and Unicenter.

This is not sniffer technology
Unlike Network Protocol Analysers (Sniffers), with Itheon QoS packets are not captured and stored and so no commercially sensitive data is recorded. Rather, the packets are analysed in real time and application response and usage meta data is stored on the database. This allows easy investigation in just minutes of switching on/plugging in as well as the ability to hold data for significant time periods - a useful feature for trend analysis.
